HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, is the international migration agency of the American Jewish community. We provide rescue and refuge around the world for Jews and other refugees escaping violence, repression, and poverty.

The pioneer songs that created the classic folk music of early Israel are reinterpreted in these two collections; proceeds of sales benefit cancer treatment and research. The Am Yisrael Chai Collection offers a sultry, joyous fusion of Middle Eastern and European melodies and rhythms by contemporary New York-based artists including Pharaoh’s Daughter (“Hinei Achal’la Bachalili”), David Broza (“Vúlai”) and Neshama Carlebach (“Tapuach Zahav”). The second phase, The Israel Sessions, features Israeli musicians living in Israel, from the legendary Yehoram Gaon (“Shir Ha’avodah Vehamlacha”) to rising star Tsahi Halevi (“Al Neharot Bavel”), who give the classics a subdued lyrical quality as well as an updated rock beat. ‫The Importance of Cancer Support Systems‬

A diagnosis of cancer can come as a frightening surprise. Where do you turn for credible information regarding your diagnosis? How do you keep your spirits up during the difficult days of treatment? Who has the answers to the many questions that you suddenly have? Cancer support groups are becoming more and more popular as a way to get not only information about how to fight your particular disease, but also to help build companionship with people who are going through the same thing.

There are many different cancer support systems all over the country and even online. The best way to find when that suits your particular needs or cancer, whether you were diagnosed with a common cancer like breast cancer or a rare and aggressive cancer like mesothelioma, you should ask your doctor about where to find a suitable cancer group. Many of the top doctors around the world truly believe in these systems because it is a great way to gain knowledge on the disease and also help each other through treatments.

The mind and body are interlinked; likely in ways we do not yet even understand. The importance of a strong attitude and a determination to live life to the fullest can be invaluable during the time of diagnosis and on through treatment and recovery. No one can be strong at all times, though. That is when it is important to find help, someone to talk with you. Building your own support system may be easier than you think.

The Internet can be a helpful tool. American Cancer Society, for example, is a wonderful website absolutely full of valuable information. It is a great place to start to learn about your illness, find local doctors, learn about ways to help you pay for your treatments, and especially to find a place of hope. It is an easy site to navigate, simply requiring a click or two in order to advance to the area of interest to you.

Cancer Support Community is another lovely site that you may wish to visit. They have a special tab just for the newly diagnosed. Another section speaks to emotional health, even teaching relaxation and visualization techniques that can ease your stress, helping you manage those especially difficult times. Consider keeping a journal, even if you are the only person ever to read it. Simply writing your negative thoughts may help you let go of them. Also, positive writing may help you validate and emphasize comforting and strengthening thoughts that will carry you through this experience.

Find your local chapter of the American Cancer Society, usually in the phone book, and drop by or give them a call. You may be surprised to know what help is available. And who knows, you may be able to help someone else along this journey as well.
