Rashanim is a trio of guitar, bass and drums/percussion combining the power of rock with the spontaneity of improvisation, deep Middle Eastern grooves, and mystical Jewish melodies. The ‘Jewish power trio’ is led by Jon Madof on guitar and includes Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz (Yo-Yo Ma, Anthony Braxton) on bass and Mathias Künzli (Lauryn Hill, Moby) on drums and percussion. Rashanim has four CDs on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records.

It is no surprise that a song called “Lamb and Kid” should come from Matityahu Shelem (1904-1975): when the prolific songwriter was not busy composing, he worked as a shepherd, first on Kibbutz Beit Alfa, which he joined upon his arrival from Poland in 1922, and later on Kibbutz Raman Yochanan. This particular tune is based on a folk melody for “Tzur Mishelo,” but it joins the many “shepherd” and festival songs that are associated with Shelem and the kibbutz movement.

In 1986, Chai Lifeline began with its pilot program, a summer camp for children suffering from cancer, known as Camp Simcha. The camp provided resources, staff and an environment exactly tailored to suit the special needs of these sick kids. Today, Chai Lifeline addresses the full spectrum of needs, from logistical to social, recreational to psychological. Chai Lifeline reaches out not only to patients, but also to parents, siblings, classmates, school faculty, and the community as well. When families feel alone and overwhelmed, Chai Lifeline extends a helping hand, a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on – fighting illness with love.
